Creating Resources for those in Need by Anabelle - April 2023 Scholarship Essay
School is a place where students can learn, grow, make connections, and find themselves. Throughout my education I have found a soft spot in my heart for those who struggle with mental health. One extremely important skill I have learned in school is communication as well as networking. If money and time were not an object, one thing I would do to make the world a better place is use my skills to promote mental health research, resources, and services.
A skill that I have that school has helped foster is an ability to communicate effectively. Using this skill, I would start a business surrounding mental health research and resources. It would be a nonprofit organization that would work to break the stigma surrounding mental health as well as bring critical resources to the under-served in our communities to assure that everyone no matter how much they have, would have access to support services. Communication is a critical skill to grow awareness of the need and build a sense of mission and purpose through the organization.
Teamwork is another skill that I have developed throughout my education. I have developed this skill as a student at Jamestown High School through my roles on the National Honor Society and as class representative on Student Council. Teamwork is an extremely important skill to run an effective business, and this is especially true in a non-profit/service industry. Using the skill of teamwork, I am confident I could manage a business as well as work together with others to create a safe place of work that could run well to contribute to identifying and meeting the needs of those vulnerable people in our communities.
By having unlimited time and resources, I would be able to create the nonprofit organization of my dreams, to provide for my community and for the people in it who continue to struggle without the resources they need. I would see this opportunity to open doors for others that they may not be able to open on their own and help them address mental health issues they may be facing so that they can achieve their own goals whether that is getting out of bed in the morning or starting a business of their own.
