How NHS has impacted me. by Amelia - December 2019 Scholarship Essay
One of the biggest organizations that I’m apart of would be my school’s chapter of the National Honors Society. I have been apart of NHS since my junior year and am glad to be able to say so, this organization has changed the very way I see the world around me and my role in it.
Before my acceptance into NHS, I had never put much thought too much about my community or how to get involved with the community events as I never needed to but volunteering through NHS has opened my eyes. I have met so many amazing people at these events and have realized just how much one person, let alone a large group of invested people, can make a community better. My most memorable experience of this was being involved in the One Chair at a Time wheelchair basketball tournament last spring. Meeting Joe Chris Rodriguez, one of the founders of the One Chair at a Time helped me realize the effect normal people can have on the community. Businesses from all over the city participated which brought the city together in a way that normally doesn’t happen and all proceeds from the tournament went to help buy wheelchairs for those lesser off, which is a surprisingly large problem where I live. A man with a giving spirit saw a need and now he helps run a non-profit to help disabled people all over the Texas Panhandle.
This community involvement through NHS has made me become a more thoughtful person who recognizes the problems in the world outside my own. While I can’t create a non-profit of my own as a high school senior, there are other things I can do like donating my time to my local food bank or using my money to participate in coat and toy drives. NHS has helped me discover a love for serving causes bigger than myself, something that I will continue to do outside of high school.
