Life Skills by Amber - August 2015 Scholarship Essay
High school standards are not covering the basics of what is waiting for students in the real world. History, english, and math are needed in modern education, however the current curriculum needs to include life skills. Students are unaware of necessary skills that will be useful during their next journey in life. The life skills course would cover understanding what a mortgage is, how to apply to college, and to sew a button onto pants. During life skills, students will experience real life scenarios and create solutions to their problems. Having the background knowledge about these situations will make high school graduates more confident in beginning life on their own.
I am a high school senior that worries about being set back in certain situations due to the lack of learning life lessons. My high school curriculum has not taught me about financing or how to write a check. I would appreciate if this class were available to me for the purpose of teaching me to be independent and understand real life processes. Parents and teachers are not always going to guide students with directions on the next step to complete. I am under prepared for what the future holds and did not realize how far behind I am until applying for college. A life skills course would educate the next generations to be successful. This course concept existed about 20 years ago in the high school curriculum and it needs to be reintroduced.
