Girl Scout volunteer work by Amber - April 2022 Scholarship Essay
During my time in middle and high school I was part of girl scouts and this let me contribute to much volunteer work. While over these years there was many different types of volunteer jobs I was part of, one that I highly enjoyed was an animal care and presentation week I did.
This animal volunteer job was meant to learn about animals and then teach young children about these animals. Many of the animals I was able to both learn and take care of were exotic type animals, like snakes, lizards, or frogs. Others were smaller mammals that could be pets or handheld, for example rabbits, hedgehogs, or ferrets. During my first few days with these animals I learned to take care of them, about each individual one, and some needed specific medical requirements which I was able to learn how to help with as well. In the second half of the week I took what I learned about these animals and taught it to young children ranging from five to eight years old. I was able to show them how to properly hold these animals, what their natural habits are, things they eat, and much more.
After the week was over I continued to help one animal while others went back to the sanctuary they were from. One of these animals was a chicken which couldn't be around other animals and needed one on one care because she only had one leg. Eventually I was able to permanently take her home where I continued to take care of her and with the help of what I learned from my girl scout work she was able to live a long happy life.
