Who I Am Today. by Amber - December 2014 Scholarship Essay
As a student who suffered with social anxiety, education has done a lot to help shape who I am today. Before high school I was the student that kept to themselves with only a few friends. I was always responsible but I never understood the importance of responsibility in school and in life. Being a teenager I wanted to just spend my time playing video games, often putting off studying until the day before an exam. Whenever I took an exam, I would always erase my answers and second guess myself. For a very long time I was never confident with the work that I had done. The education I received taught me responsibility, time management, and even boosted my confidence.
Ever since I was little I have always wanted to be a Veterinarian. Once I started high school things became more difficult for me because I wasn't use to having so much responsibility. I have always been responsible for my grades but I never realized how they would affect my future. I started to work harder and put more effort into my work hoping that it would keep my grades up. When it came time to choose my college I also found out my GPA mattered. To get into the program at the college I wanted to go to I had to keep my GPA above a 2.5. I had good grades and wasn't too concerned with a low GPA but I still had my own responsibility of keeping that up. In order to keep the grades I had I also had to learn how to manage my time wisely.
Time management became very crucial to me. I had to set aside the video games and make sure that I could put every ounce of effort into doing my homework and studying for tests. In one of my classes the teacher taught us that we needed to manage our time wisely because he would give us a lot of homework that was due the next day. Even in the work place and in college I learned how to use my time wisely to complete certain tasks. At work the team is given a certain task that has to be completed within a certain amount of time. Time management has helped me prioritize tasks to get all of it done within that time frame. As for college, classes require you to study two hours for every hour of lecture time you have. This is when you have to use your time wisely when it comes to studying and personal life. Because education has helped me with time management, I am able to balance work, school and personal life.
In high school I was never confident with my work. I would always erase answers and second guess myself. I would never approach strangers like I do now. My teachers would tell me that my work was excellent or that I was doing well in the class and that I should have more confidence in myself. The extra push from my teachers gave me the confidence I needed to be able to work with a team and with strangers on a daily basis.
Education has helped me not only to be responsible but realize the importance of responsibility. Education has helped me use my time wisely and gave me the confidence boost I needed. I feel like because of the education I received I have become a better, more confident person.
