The Human Night Owl by Amber - January 2019 Scholarship Essay

I have always found it interesting how people classify others as either a morning person or a night owl like there cannot be anyone in between. I have always thought of myself as a night owl, but as I have grown I have changed my mind. Throughout high school I have challenged myself and pushed my limits. I have enrolled in multiple AP level courses, packed my daily schedule to the fullest, and taken the most difficult classes offered at my school as well as signing up for additional online classes outside of the typical school day. By taking on all of those challenging classes, there have been many extra-long nights and many extra-early mornings. Through those times, I have discovered that, personally, I prefer to stay up late rather than to wake up early. When staying up I tend to get into a rhythm in which I end up completing most, if not all, of my work. That is not to say that I do not enjoy getting up early. I admit that I like waking up to see the sunrise, but typically I would have to say that sleeping in is definitely a joy of mine. Therefore, if I must pick the classification of either a night owl or a morning person, I am forced to conclude that I would fall under the night owl category.

I seem to be most productive at night because by the time the day is practically over I am exhausted physically but not mentally. For my entire life my parents have been constantly challenging the boundaries of my mind at all times of the day - in the morning, during the day, and even very late at night when I am exhausted. I have grown accustomed to pushing through my mental fog and forcing myself to finish my duties regardless of how tired I am. Now, if I were to wake up early in the morning, my mind is consumed with the thought of going back to bed even though I know I have work to do. That is why I am a night owl. I cannot get work done in the morning.

I have to say that being a night owl is definitely enjoyable. I mean, you cannot eat snacks and other munchies at five o'clock in the morning. That just seals the deal for me. There are so many benefits to being a night owl but I would have to say that munchies is the best part of being a night owl. Why would you want to be a morning person when there are so many perks to being a night owl?
