You Can't Make Cupcakes without Science by Amber - March 2018 Scholarship Essay

Second grade- a time of class activities, and deciding what your favorite subject it. Mine was either math or english, but absolutely not handwriting or science. They both were not fun, at all. But, they were needed. When I was in second grade I had a dream of being a baker. I wanted to make cookies and cupcakes and cakes for the rest of my life. At that point, I didn’t think I needed schooling anymore. I could read well enough, I could write, and I knew what tasted good and what tasted bad. I was set and ready to go. Looking back, I was wrong. Very wrong.

You see, learning, and all forms of learning are important. Without learning I would have been stuck with a very small number of skills. I wouldn’t have had to learn how to think. I know, sounds dumb, right? But learning how to think is so important. It helps you do what you want to do. It can help you solve problems with your friends, or learn how to do something exciting. Learning is the key to success in life. After all, if you don’t learn how to do something, how can you do well at it?

Take baking, for instance. I wanted to bake without learning science, or writing, or really how to read. If I became a baker after I finished second grade- I would not do very well. I would need to know the science of baking- how reactions work and how heat works- in order to successfully bake the things I wanted to bake. I couldn’t do that if I didn’t continue my learning. Once I became a baker, I would also want to continue learning, to be the best baker possible. Imagine there was a new fancy oven, and every other baker had learned how to use it. Some even took a class on the best ways to use this new fancy oven. But me, I decided that I didn’t need to learn anymore, and didn’t get the new oven. My cupcakes and cookies and cakes would still be good, but not as good as the people who used the new fancy oven. They learned more, even after they finished school, and good came out of it.

Finishing school is important in learning the basics of how to think. But learning after school is done is still very important. By learning in school, and after, you can not only achieve your dreams, but be the best of the best at doing it.
