"What Attending College Mean to Me" by amber - June 2013 Scholarship Essay
In today's society, it is imperative that one attends a university after high school to continue their education. Almost every job one sees these days one must have a four year degree, and, at minimal, a two year degree. Society is constantly peer pressuring us to attend college in order to succeed at life. On the contrary, it is not these peer pressures that got me enrolled in school, but ambitions of my own. I graduated from Siegel High School in 2008 without any desire to attend college. My mind was set on pursuing a career in cosmetology. I had constantly heard from countless friends of mine "What a waste of time college is," or "What a waste of money college is." I knew I had to do something to make some kind of money in life so I chose to enroll myself into cosmetology school. I completed the year course and obtained my degree. When I got out into the real world I had trouble finding a place to work becuase everyone wanted someone with experience. I learned the hard way that not everything in life always works out the way you want it to. I had talked to my friends and partner about wanting to go to school and pursue a degree in something that had always fascinated me: psychology. Everyone told me that it was a bad idea that I had been out of school for too long and would never make it. I have definitely grown up quite a bit in the past few years and realized that what I needed was a new group of friends. I decided to give it a go and get back into school. So in answering, "what college means to me," I would have to say that it means my second chance. Attending college has opened the door to some wonderful oppertunities for me. I will never regret my decision to go back to school, no matter where life takes me. Some people do not realize until much later on in life their mistakes, but thankfully I have been able to. I have been given this privelage to start over again and start my second shot at doing things right this time.
