The Third Branch by Amber - June 2013 Scholarship Essay

If there's anything I've learned from Economics class, it's that all factors leading to a country or individuals success are indefinitely connected to the same root. That root is education. I believe my future success is made up of three branches. The first is, of course, education. The second branch is experience. The third, and perhaps the most important, branch is ambition. I have already acquired the branches of experience and ambition. Dozier-Libbey Medical High School truly prepared me for a career in the medical field. Every class is centered around the idea of medicine - even history! I've been able to acquire information about not only a wide array of aspects concerning traditional, western mediine, but also complementary and alternative medicine of other countries! My participation in HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America) further developed my experience and ambition, as I've been able to participate in health-related competitive events at the Leadership Conferences. I was able to place 2nd in the state of California at the State Leadership Conference for event Researched Persuasive Speaking on the topic of a fat tax against salty and unhealthy foods. I am a really competitive person. And I mean REALLY competitive. But when I went on to compete at Nationals in Orlando this past summer, the feeling of hostile competition suddenly melted away as I was able to network with other future health professionals passionate about bettering society. Dozier-Libbey even provided me with opportunities to attain experience as I was able to participate in job shadows at the local John Muir Hospital, and through InterAct club I faced a new situation to improve every single week. I was able to coordinate fundraising events for many different charities, even raising enough money to send a truck through low-income neighborhoods, providing free Breast Cancer scans for those who could not afford it. My final branch, however, has not reached its final destination. I want to further my education to broaden my opportunities in the future. College will open these doors for me! While I am not yet sure of exactly what profession I want to seek, I can say with certainly that I want to work in the field of healthcare by observing how difficult it is for the average American to pay medical expenses. No society should be burdened by such a deprivation. I can also say with certainty that I want to continue working with charitable organizations and maybe even become an official representative in the future if I am fortunate enough! I also wish to someday with with Doctors Without Borders - they are the source of my ambition!
