I Would Teach History by Amber - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
If roles were reversed, I would teach a subject every student in the United States participates in, whether they realize it or not. I would teach a subject filled with tales of treachery, duels, and deceit. I would teach a subject that seems stale to some and vibrant to others. I would teach history.
History has long been one of my favorite subjects. Since I was little, I have devoured countless history books and documentaries. Historical facts seem to lodge themselves into my brain through no effort of my own. They also leap of my tongue at a moment’s notice, and I catch myself stating facts I thought I had forgotten.
Although I enjoy learning about other academic subjects, I believe that history is the one I would be able to communicate most effectively. While I make good grades in math, it would be difficult for me to articulate mathematical principles in a concise manner. Although they make sense in my head, it is difficult for me to describe them. With history, however, I am able to explain people and events very well.
Also, I would enjoy teaching history because it is a concrete subject, not a theoretical one. Facts are facts, and although human events are complex, there is no theorizing or philosophizing one’s way out of a fact.
In conclusion, history is the academic subject I would most enjoy teaching if roles were reversed. It is a fascinating, concrete subject that I believe I could communicate effectively. Although my long-term goals do not include much history learning, it is a subject I enjoy immensely.
