finding my voice by Amani - April 2026 Scholarship Essay
One skill I hope to master in the next few years is effective communication. Not just speaking, but being able to express my thoughts clearly, confidently, and in a way that people actually understand and remember. I’ve realized that communication is behind almost everything, relationships, opportunities, and success in areas like business and finance. No matter how strong your ideas are, they don’t mean much if you can’t present them well.
For me, this isn’t just about how I talk to other people, but also how I grow as a person. I want to become better not only toward others, but toward myself too. That means being more honest with how I think, more confident in what I say, and more intentional in how I carry myself. The way I communicate affects how people see me, but it also affects how I see myself.
Right now, I’m already working on becoming more intentional with how I speak. I focus on using clear, direct statements instead of overexplaining or doubting myself. I pay attention to my tone, confidence, and body language, because communication isn’t just about words. It’s about presence. I’ve also been learning from strong speakers and studying how they organize their thoughts and deliver their message.
Over the next few years, I plan to keep improving by practicing consistently. I’ll speak up more in class, take part in discussions, and put myself in situations where I have to communicate clearly, even when it’s uncomfortable. I also want to keep learning from videos, books, and real-life examples. Most importantly, I’ll reflect on my progress, what’s working, what isn’t, and how I can keep improving.
Mastering communication won’t happen overnight, but I know it’s a skill that will shape my future. It will help me build stronger relationships, create better opportunities, and become a more confident and self-aware person. That’s why I’m committed to developing it now.
