The Researcher for the CDC by Amanda - December 2015 Scholarship Essay
I want to cure diseases. In ten years I see myself as a scientific researcher, because that’s what I’ve always been fascinated with since I was a child. I know that whatever I decide on as my major it will be within the science, math, engineering, technology, or STEM field of study. What I am interested now is the research and development for treatment of diseases, viruses, and bacteria, because of the growing number of antibiotic resistant bacteria, and mutating viruses. I believe that I can contribute greatly to this ever growing field, as a researcher for the Center of Disease Control (CDC) or other pharmaceutical companies, where I can make the biggest impact. I can help people by researching diseases, developing new drugs to combat bacteria without horrible possible side effects, and vaccines to limit the number of people who die from viruses around the world without the blessings of vaccines. This is how I will contribute to the good of the world around me by eliminating the amount of pathogens that plague the world.
My education can help me reach my goal, by providing me with the needed opportunities to gain experience to do my job, and to understand it fully. Education could also provide me with labs and similar opportunities to participate in my selected career before being fully qualified. Without education I would not even be aware of the microorganisms around me, and oblivious to the different ways that I can help people through research and development. Further education can continue to open my eyes so I can have a better definition of where I will be in ten years, and education can demonstrate whether my current dream of developing cures and treatment is something that I would enjoy, through labs, internships, and other similar educational opportunities.
I dream of being able to cure diseases through research and development, and one place I can do that is the CDC, where I will be able to be completely submerged in the research. I want to pursue secondary education after high school so that I can reach my goal, and understand what I am researching and have the qualifications to actually find cures for different diseases. There is nothing else I would rather do than pursue secondary education to reach my high dreams, and help, through research, to save people who currently suffer in desperation.
