I Will Be a Great Nurse by Amanda - March 2025 Scholarship Essay

In ten years from now, I plan to have already earned my B.S. in Nursing degree and be working in a hospital as a Register Nurse specializing in Labor and Delivery.

Whether I’m providing first aid to a young swimmer, helping a fellow dancer through an anxiety attack before getting on stage for competition, donating blood, volunteering at fundraisers for the fire department or helping elderly neighbors, I feel extreme joy when I help people.

In the Fall, I will begin the Honors Nursing Program at Sacred Heart University. Being a NICU baby myself, I’m drawn specifically to the labor and delivery specialty. I know that my parents were grateful to the nurses who took care of me and eased their worries after the complications during my birth, and I feel a natural connection.

I cannot imagine a more rewarding job than bringing a life into the world. Giving birth is a stressful, painful and overwhelming experience. It won’t matter how loud the screams are, if the parents take their anger out on me, or if they don’t remember I was there or even how I helped, if I’m lucky enough to be a small part of that magical experience when a parent sees their child for the first time it will be worth it. If there are complications, which I know there often will be, I will be there to support the baby and the parents.

Being awarded this scholarship would help alleviate some of the financial burden of tuition and hopefully reduce the amount of student loans I will need to take. It would also give me the opportunity to focus more time on my studies, instead of working too many hours during my first year of school.
