The girl with dreams by amanda - July 2019 Scholarship Essay
There once was a girl who loved to read. Whenever she got the chance to, she would read anything and everything. Unfortunately, she did not have access to books. One day, an older girl approached her and offered her a deal. She would give the little girl 300 books for 100 dollars. The young girl instantly agreed, despite not having more than 5 cents in her pocket. They decided that the young girl would pay each week until she had enough money. Each day, the young girl would save her lunch money. She decided to ask her younger sister for her money. For almost three months, both the young girl and her sister did not eat lunch. After paying the initial amount, the older girl claimed she had more books that she would sell as a bundle. So the young girl and her sister did not eat for two more months. After finally making the full payment, the girl and her books disappeared. And in her midst, she left a young girl with shattered dreams.
This girl was my mother. She grew up with her little sister hating her. She was forced to drop out of school when her mother fell ill. She had to go to work to support her family in a new country. She watched as all her siblings grew up with the best education. Years later, she watched with sorrow as all her siblings became successful. They were able to become financially independent. That is what I would define as having a passion for education. My mother's willingness to sacrifice so much just to read and further educate herself never fails to astonish me. Her love for learning has inspired me to embrace learning as a privilege rather than a responsibility.
