As Unique As Can Be by Amanda - November 2018 Scholarship Essay

This year, I walked into my AP English class and my teacher gave an assignment: write a six word poem. We could use either use a thesaurus or little magnets that had words on them. The whole class, including myself, chose the magnets because, while they were more of a challenge, they were a lot more fun. However, I stood at the desk the longest of my peers just trying to find six words that made sense together- words that formed a real poem. Eventually, I found my six words. “Be unique, speak from your soul.” That was the poem I made from those magnets, and those six words will be my senior quote.
There are many people in the world, over seven billion, and each one is unique in some way. We all have our strengths and weaknesses, our own little personality quirks that make us who we are. However, some people believe that these quirks should be hidden away because no one will like them for who they are. As a result, they build these personas, just so they can attempt to fit in. But, I believe that people shouldn’t need to try to fit in. I believe that people should find a group, or even one single person, that fits them.
Like everyone else, I am unique in my own ways. I’m quiet, yet talkative. I’m shy, but I’m friendly. I have a really good memory, but at the same time, I’m extremely forgetful. While these traits seem contradictory, they are just a few of the quirks that make me who I am.
Somewhere in the world, there is a place where everyone belongs. The problem is, so many people are afraid to show their true selves, to speak from their soul, that they never find that place. This is something that everyone deserves to find. So, be unique. Speak from your soul, your true self. Otherwise, the place in which you belong will be missing one extraordinary person.
