Meeting The World by Amanda - November 2016 Scholarship Essay

I live in Howell, a small city/town in Michigan with a population under 10,000 people. I’ve been alive 17 years and I have never lived anywhere else in this time. There is nothing wrong with living here, it has been a great place to grow up and I am very blessed to have met the people that are in my life now. Although I enjoy living here, I’m ready to go to college and break out of the comfort that comes with being where you have always been, with the people you have always known.

My dream is to go to a large university, with an abundance of people from different walks of life. I think that life after high school is exciting, it’s the new chapter in your life where you begin to think for yourself more and make your life what you want it to be. You’re a part of the “real” world for the first time and there’s so many opportunities to experience different things and grow. The cool thing about college is that you are surrounded by thousands of people that are at this point in their life along with you, but everyone comes from a different background and has different knowledge and ideas to offer. According to the census, Howell’s population is 94% Caucasian. Most large colleges and universities make a strong effort to create campuses that are ethnically-diverse, and I think it’s important to study and collaborate with people that come from different groups than yourself, so this is very exciting to me.

Aside from my peers, I am excited to meet professors and professionals that are in my field of interest. It will be so interesting and overall beneficial to meet people that have extensive knowledge in what I want to do with the rest of my life. College is a great place to interact with these people, and develop real world connections. Having connections is important, and may be helpful when trying to find an internship or job later down the road.

Studying abroad is becoming increasingly popular with today's schools and this is something I am very interested in. College provides you with many opportunities to travel, while getting your education and meeting new people. Meeting people from different cultures and societies is a very eye-opening experience that you can grow a lot from if you take advantage of it. I have met a lot of people that travel, and I am so inspired by their stories and the relationships they have developed with different kinds of people from all over the world. This is has always been something I want to be a part of.

Not only am I excited to meet new people and learn from them but I am eager to share my life experiences and ideas with the people that I have yet to meet. College is the perfect place to meet, interact with, learn from and grow with others. This will be the invaluable experience that I will be most grateful for during these upcoming years.
