A Step Into Adulthood by Amanda - November 2016 Scholarship Essay
There are many milestones in human life. One of the first milestones a person goes through is walking. Others include talking, eating solid food, and potty training. As we get older, milestones get fewer and fewer with more time in between them. As a young adult, one of the most important milestones for many people is going to college. Personally, I am looking forward to going to college. I will be most thankful for the responsibilities that I will learn during my college experience.
When I go to college, I will not have my parents hovering over me and helping me with tasks such as making food and doing laundry. Starting in the fall of 2017, I will be completely on my own. While this may seem terrifying, it is actually a good thing. I will be forced to figure out how to do things on my own. For example, I will need to learn how to make nutritious recipes that will fill me up. Cooking for my roommate will give me experience with making meals for more than one person, a skill that I can use someday when I own my own home and live by myself. Laundry is another area that I will be thankful to gain skills. Growing up, my parents just took care of the laundry for me, because it saved water to do all the clothes together. While it may sound weird, I'm looking forward to doing my own laundry in college because it will give me more confidence in my abilities.
In the end, being independent will benefit me because I will know how to do household chores when I move into a house following my college education. Going to college will teach me new ways to accomplish a task, and help me to reach my goal of living on my own and having a family someday.
