How flashcards can make college easier by Amanda - May 2016 Scholarship Essay

College and education play an essential aspect of success in western culture. While multiple individuals attend college each year it would be nice to a few study tricks up your sleeve for those first exams. College is filled with crazy activities involving athletics and parties but each course can be extremely stressful in college. Adjusting to all of the life changes in college can increase one's stress levels but to ensure you pass all of the expensive college courses you must find a study technique that works best for you. I have found flashcards to be my lifesaver in each tough course I have taken so far from anatomy to microbiology and my cards have never failed me! Writing flashcards can be time consuming but the positive part of the use of time is while you are writing the cards you are reading and learning material. When the cards are finished you have officially completed step one of studying and the next step is to review the cards again after a short break and it works best to read them out to yourself. I personally am a visual and audio learner so I can pick up a ton of information through lectures but using flashcards ensures I know all aspects of the course. When I have the ability to read the cards out to myself or other individuals it provides me with an upper hand for exams because I simply recall hearing specific words and can make an efficient guess on a test. Also, it is important to know if an exam will be using concepts and applying them to daily tasks or scenarios those can be included on the cards. A flashcard does not have to simply be definitions they can involve examples, scenarios, synonyms, antonyms and more. After creating the specific cards that are needed I will study them until I know every one because I know that repetition is key to memorization. The time spent studying and memorizing is not exciting but receiving an A on an exam is an excellent reward for all of the hard work.

I have shown others my techniques for studying in the toughest courses and they have done better on exams using this technique than just studying and reviewing notes. When individuals begin college they have no idea what to expect and having an awesome study technique can be a life saver. We live in a generation where technology has become an important aspect in learning as well but I have found that we cannot retain information as well through a computer and typing. Handwriting and speaking are the two unstoppable techniques that can guide all individuals to success in college.
