A Decade From Now by Alyssa - March 2025 Scholarship Essay
Ten years from now, I see myself standing in a first grade classroom, surrounded by eager young learners who are just beginning their educational journey. The walls will be covered with colorful alphabet charts, student artwork, and motivational posters. My desk will be full of lesson plans that meet the diverse needs of my students. I will be achieving my dream, since first grade, of becoming a teacher. I hope to be shaping their young minds, creating in them a love for learning, and being a positive influence on each student, parent, and staff member I come in contact with.
My journey to this future begins with my education. The path to becoming a teacher isn't just about earning a degree. It's about gaining the knowledge, skills, and experience that's needed to inspire and guide students. For the past 4 years, I have participated in education and training classes, provided by the Career and Technical Education program at my high school, that have allowed me to prepare for this career and step foot in the classroom as a student teacher. I also plan to pursue a bachelor's degree in elementary education at Tarleton State University, where I will take courses to help me understand how children learn best, how to create engaging lesson plans, and how to foster a positive learning environment.
Beyond coursework, I know that hands-on experience will be crucial in preparing me for the classroom. Student teaching has been and will be a defining moment in my education, allowing me to work alongside experienced teachers, apply what I’ve learned, and develop my own teaching style. Observing and teaching in real classrooms will help me understand the daily challenges and rewards of being an educator. It will also teach me patience, adaptability, and the importance of building relationships with students and their families.
In addition to preparing me academically and professionally, my education will shape me personally. Through my studies and experiences, I will grow in confidence, leadership, and resilience, which are qualities that are essential for a successful teacher. I will learn how to communicate effectively, solve problems creatively, and adapt to different learning styles. My education will also prepare me to support students from all backgrounds, ensuring that every child in my classroom feels valued and capable of success.
While my career as a teacher will be an important part of my life, I also envision a future where I have a family of my own. In ten years, I hope to be married and raising children, balancing my role as a dedicated educator with my role as a loving mother. I believe that my experiences as a teacher will make me a better parent, and vice versa. Understanding child development, learning techniques, and the importance of patience and encouragement will not only help me in the classroom but also in my own home.
Balancing a teaching career with family life will come with its challenges, but I am confident that my education and training will help me manage both. I plan to develop strong time management skills, establish a healthy work-life balance, and prioritize self-care to avoid burnout. I also look forward to being involved in my community as a supportive parent and educator, such as by attending performances and games of my children and students.
Ultimately, my education will be the foundation for the life I dream of living. It will provide me with the knowledge and skills to be an effective, compassionate teacher while also preparing me for the responsibilities of family life. Ten years from now, I see myself living a fulfilling and meaningful life, making a difference in the lives of young students and raising a family with love and care.
Though the journey ahead will require hard work and dedication, I am excited for the future. Education is not just a stepping stone to my career, but it is the key to shaping the person I want to become. Through learning, growth, and perseverance, I know that I will achieve my dreams and make a lasting impact in the world of education and in my home.
