AP Psychology - My Journey by Alyssa - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My name is Alyssa Morrissey, and I am a high school senior with a passion for social work and law. Throughout my academic journey, I have encountered various challenges, but one experience stands out as particularly formative. This challenge not only tested my academic abilities but also shaped my determination and resilience.

During my junior year, I enrolled in an Advanced Placement (AP) Psychology class. I was excited about the opportunity to delve deeper into a subject that fascinates me, but I soon realized that the course was far more demanding than I had anticipated. The workload was intense, with extensive reading assignments, complex essays, and weekly quizzes. Despite my initial enthusiasm, I found myself struggling to keep up.

The first few weeks were overwhelming. I spent countless hours trying to absorb the material, but my test scores did not reflect my efforts. I was accustomed to doing well in my classes, so this was a significant blow to my confidence. I felt frustrated and began to doubt my abilities. However, I knew that giving up was not an option. I was determined to overcome this challenge and succeed in the class.

To tackle this obstacle, I decided to change my approach to studying. I started by organizing my notes more effectively, breaking down the material into manageable sections. I also created a detailed study schedule, allocating specific times for reading, reviewing, and practicing essay writing. This helped me manage my time more efficiently and reduced my stress.

Additionally, I sought help from my teacher, who was incredibly supportive. I attended after-school study sessions and asked for feedback on my essays. This guidance was invaluable, as it helped me understand where I was going wrong and how I could improve. My teacher’s encouragement reminded me that it was okay to seek help and that learning is a process.

I also formed a study group with a few classmates. We met regularly to discuss the material, quiz each other, and share insights. This collaborative approach not only made studying more enjoyable but also allowed me to gain different perspectives on the topics we covered. It was reassuring to know that I was not alone in my struggles, and together, we motivated each other to persevere.

Gradually, my efforts began to pay off. My test scores improved, and I felt more confident in my understanding of the material. By the end of the semester, I had not only caught up but also excelled in the class. This experience taught me the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and collaboration.

Overcoming this academic challenge also reinforced my passion for social work and law. It reminded me of the importance of resilience and determination, qualities that are essential in these fields. As I prepare to pursue my studies in college, I am more motivated than ever to make a positive impact in my community.

This experience has shown me that challenges are not obstacles but opportunities for growth. I have learned that with the right mindset, support, and strategies, I can overcome any hurdle that comes my way. I am grateful for this lesson, as it has prepared me for the challenges that lie ahead in college and beyond.

My journey through AP Psychology was a pivotal moment in my academic life. It taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, collaboration, and self-belief. I am proud of how I overcame this challenge and am excited to apply these skills as I pursue my passion for social work and law. I am confident that this experience has equipped me with the resilience and determination I need to succeed in my future endeavors.
