What personal experiences led you to select your chosen major? by Alyssa - February 2024 Scholarship Essay

As I think about the prompt question given, it makes me reconsider why I chose biochemistry as my major in college. I chose biochemistry because I have always been passionate about science and I want to make a difference in people's lives by saving them. Biochemistry is concerned with the chemical processes that take place within living organisms, which means it deals with the very substance and process of life itself. Science has always been a significant part of my life, and I see its applications everywhere I look, from the beverages we drink to the pills that people take every day. It is these applications that inspire me to study biochemistry.

Many people say that they want to make a difference in the world, but few actually follow through on that promise. My goal is to change that by using my knowledge of biochemistry to help people in need. For example, diabetes runs in my family, and even the healthiest among us are not immune to it. I want to find a way to prevent this disease so that my loved ones, as well as others who suffer from it, can live healthier, happier lives. I want to have the ability to save not only my family and friends but also strangers who can spread the word about how medicine can help people without damaging their lives. Nobody should have to take medication for 15 years before it starts working; it should be an instant solution that lasts for a long time.

That is why I have chosen biochemistry as my major in college. I plan to continue my research in life sciences and substances to improve the lives of those who have been suffering for years.
