Student Volunteer Work by Alyssa - August 2021 Scholarship Essay
I looked down at my phone checking the time before lightly jogging into my old middle school. 6:27. I had a few minutes before the school play started. All around me, crowds of parents and teachers waited to see their kids perform in the school play. I found an empty seat in the second row from the stage, swerving around to get a better view. Suddenly, the students entered on stage smiling down at me. I sighed as my heart came to a steady beat. They had begun their performance.
The weeks I spent gathering cardboard, memorizing lines, and mixing paint had seemed to pay off. Left and right I saw smiling faces. Parents' eyes lit up as their children danced and sang. Originally, I’ll admit all I needed was a signature for my school’s volunteer Program. After some time, I got to know the middle schoolers. They ran up to greet me everyday. So everyday, I came. Summit Middle School is where I volunteered and enrolled in myself. Now, I’m going into my senior year at Johnston High School. I’m currently smiling as I reflect on my connection to those kids. Beyond the signatures, paperwork, and ect, I’m glad to say I’ll continue to work with those students for the next year to come.
