The English Teacher by Alyssa - July 2014 Scholarship Essay
In past years I have been taught by multiple English teachers, but there is one that had stood out among the others. My junior year I had an English teacher who opened up a whole new world to me. I had always thought reading was so boring and dull - especially with the curriculum from years before. This lady helped me advance in so many ways and view reading as something I can enjoy.
I had AP English my junior year and I was dreading every minute of it at the beginning. I felt as if I could not achieve what was expected of me. My teacher talked to me about the class and what I had to do. The weight of the world became bearable.
As we progressed into the semester, the class became easier. I found that the books we were given were quite enjoyable. My teacher would give us some of her favorite books to read as a part of our curriculum. The books would give me something to think about and it broadened my horizons. I find that what was once complicated and an absolute pain is now something that I actually like.
Reading is very important as many people would agree. You must read every day and reading was something that I once hated. My English teacher helped ignite a fire in me for reading that I never knew would be there. I am so grateful that someone brought to light that torture is not the definition of reading. Reading impacts everything about your education. Today, I love reading and I owe it all to my English teacher.
