Teaching Without Teaching by Alyssa - July 2016 Scholarship Essay

One of the best teachers I have had in my 12 years of schooling is Mrs. Abbott. She teaches the Teacher Education classes at my high school and I have had 4 classes with her over the course of 2 years. While she teaches her students the lessons that are required, she also teaches them life lessons.

The most important lesson I have learned from Mrs. Abbott is not about how I need to act when I am in the hallway or that I cannot procrastinate in life. It is that I need to enjoy life and find a job I love. Mrs. Abbott does not tell her students directly to go out and find the job they will love; she shows it. Through her teaching I have learned that she loves what she does. Mrs. Abbott is one of the most effective teachers I have had and it is because she loves her job and is always happy to see her students.

The last two years with Mrs. Abbott have shown me that the more a person enjoys their job, the more enjoyable they are to be around. I hope to someday be half as effective as a teacher as my teacher Mrs. Abbott is and be able to teach my students life lessons without actually teaching them. Enjoying my life and my job is something I learned from Mrs. Abbott, my Teacher Education teacher.
