My New Years Resolution: Abolishing Self-Doubt. by Alyne - January 2016 Scholarship Essay
The year 2016 is finally here, there are so many small resolutions I have made for myself but the one that will make me a better student is annihilating my self-defeating vocabulary and self-doubt. I have always been extremely hard on myself by constantly thinking I am dumb or I can’t do something. I hope this year I can reverse this lack of self-confidence and self-doubt.
Throughout my school years, I have convinced myself that I am not good enough and I always tell myself I can’t. Eventually, I started to believe it and I wasn’t able to perform tasks successfully. I want to leave all these negative thoughts behind in order to do my best and be the best version of myself. I cannot keep repeating what I did wrong, but remind myself of all the things I have done right. I hope to start telling myself I can and eventually I will be able to complete the task successfully. I want to come to an understanding that there are concepts that are difficult and that I don’t need to put myself down for not understanding them the first time around. Positively talking to myself will make me a better student because I will have a positive attitude on everything, bring my confidence up, and have more interest/curiosity about learning.
My first steps with thinking positive thoughts will be putting little notes for myself that say things like “You can do it”, “Stop doubting yourself”, or “You are smart”. Another method will be every time I say something degrading about myself I have to say two nice things. I hope this will eventually lead me to believe in myself with everything I do.
As cheesy as it sounds, I want to practice self-love every chance I get. There is a lot of craziness in college that seems to dominate all of our lives, but my goal is to stay grounded, confident, and positive.
