Overcoming by Alvin - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My name is Alvin Metz, and I am currently a sophomore at Louisiana State University, majoring in Management. When I think about the challenging academic experiences I have faced, one particular moment stands out. It was during my first year at LSU, a time that was both exciting and overwhelming. The transition from high school to college was a big leap, and I found myself struggling to keep up with the demands of college-level coursework.

In high school, I was used to maintaining a high GPA. I graduated with a 4.0, and I was confident in my academic abilities. However, college presented a whole new set of challenges. The workload was heavier, the classes were larger, and the expectations were higher. I quickly realized that the study habits that had worked for me in high school were not sufficient for college. My GPA dropped to 2.78, and I knew I had to make some changes.

One of the most challenging courses for me was Introduction to Accounting. Despite my interest in management, the numbers and concepts in accounting seemed foreign and complex. I struggled to understand the material, and my grades reflected that struggle. I felt discouraged and started to doubt my abilities. It was a tough time, but I knew I could not give up.

To overcome this challenge, I had to change my approach to studying. First, I sought help from my professor during office hours. This was not easy for me, as I was used to figuring things out on my own. However, I realized that asking for help was a sign of strength, not weakness. My professor was supportive and explained the concepts in a way that made more sense to me. This one-on-one interaction was invaluable and boosted my confidence.

I also formed a study group with some classmates who were facing similar challenges. We met regularly to discuss the material, share notes, and quiz each other. This collaborative environment made learning more engaging and less intimidating. It was reassuring to know that I was not alone in my struggles and that we could support each other.

In addition to seeking help and forming a study group, I had to improve my time management skills. I started using a planner to organize my tasks and set specific goals for each study session. This helped me stay on track and avoid last-minute cramming, which had been a significant issue for me. By breaking down the material into manageable chunks, I was able to understand it better and retain the information.

Another important step was changing my mindset. I had to remind myself that it was okay to struggle and make mistakes. Learning is a process, and it is not always smooth. I began to view challenges as opportunities to grow rather than obstacles to overcome. This shift in perspective made a big difference in how I approached my studies.

Through hard work, persistence, and a willingness to seek help, I was able to improve my understanding of accounting and my grades. By the end of the semester, I had a much better grasp of the material, and my grades reflected that improvement. This experience taught me the importance of adaptability, resilience, and the power of a supportive community.

Looking back, I am grateful for the challenges I faced during my first year at LSU. They taught me valuable lessons that have not only helped me in my academic journey but have also prepared me for future challenges in my career and life. I have learned that it is okay to ask for help, that teamwork can make a significant difference, and that perseverance is key to overcoming obstacles.

As I continue my studies in management, I carry these lessons with me. I am committed to maintaining a growth mindset and to seeking out opportunities to learn and improve. I know that challenges are inevitable, but I am confident in my ability to face them head-on and emerge stronger.

In conclusion, my challenging academic experience during my first year at LSU was a turning point in my educational journey. It taught me the importance of seeking help, working collaboratively, managing my time effectively, and maintaining a positive mindset. These skills will undoubtedly serve me well in my future endeavors, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have learned them.
