My Dream by Alviance - August 2024 Scholarship Essay

I have dreamed of being in healthcare since I was a little girl. Once before, I aspired to become an OBG/YN, and now I aspire to be a registered Nurse. After deep diving and researching about ob-gyn and what they really do, I just decided it wasn't for me; I wanted more. When learning about nursing, I ran across many articles and documents on black women and men not being taken seriously in healthcare. It saddened me that people had a mindset that black people couldn't feel the same pain as white people. Many had gotten these mindsets from all the way to the 1800s when surgeries were being done on enslaved people without any anesthesia, and they'd still live. Many black women died during birth because they weren't provided any meds or the right amount for pain. This again saddened my soul! As a black woman, after knowing this, I want to help and be the reason black people can walk into a hospital or clinic with confidence they'll make it out safe and treated respectfully.
The most crucial characteristic in nursing is being patient. I'll 1000% always believe that. Many need more patience nursing comes with, and that's the main reason why many bash nursing or look at it as a stressful profession. I have all the patience in the world to work this job and never get tired of it, but being realistic, everyone gets tired of working. It's life, but this is a job you can still go to and work and be happy that you're helping people. You'll get a good outcome when you love your job. Being able to change my patients, listen to them, deal with their mood swings and aggression, and provide emotional support to my patients and their families is something I can do! Something I want to do!
This money will go directly towards my tuition to help improve my chances of completing my first semester of college. My thought process and determination for wanting this degree set me apart from the other candidates. The ability to answer these questions straightforwardly and without hesitation proves that I deserve this scholarship. My reasoning for becoming a nurse is to understand better why I need this scholarship.
With my college education this'll allow me to make my dreams come true and make the world a safer space even if it's small. My dedication can and will inspire others to think the same way or similar. Maybe after I get my bachelors degree I'll go back and get my masters. Open my own clinic that'll help people in neighborhoods that're less fortunate and don't have enough funds to keep themselves safe and healthy. We future nurses will make it more comfortable to go to hospitals and clinics. My community as a whole will fill the reinforcements that i'll do on it. I will do this. I will accomplish this.
