Where Curiosity Guided Me by Alvera - February 2025 Scholarship Essay

Learning more about the dynamics of the world and how money revolves around us has always been an interest of mine. I’ve always wanted to look forward to my future and decide, what would I possibly move forward with. Out of curiosity, I decided to take college courses during the summer and as of right now, focusing on accounting and economics. I was anxious as to what I wanted to do for myself. I’ve always kept in mind that regardless of what I major in, I will find a way to help those around me and hopefully make an impact.
With accounting and economics, I learned that they focus a lot on being able to manage finances, along with trying to help businesses make good financial decisions. There are lots of risks that come with businesses, and being able to know certain formulas and methods to ensure that a business is in the right is helpful. Along with this, this emphasized me to want to open my own business and use these skills to good use. I’d also like to help out with guiding other individuals with their journey. Nonetheless, being the mentor everyone wants has always been my motivation to push myself forward and change the lives of those around me.
In general, moving along with the business world and learning various factors about it has sparked lots of peculiarities. Growing up, I was well aware of what my family had gone through, coming to the United States. They didn’t have as much money and always worked with what they had to ensure we had roofs over our heads and food on the table. They had also sacrificed their time to ensure that I had learned and gotten every opportunity possible. I remember only seeing my mom during the morning of school, and that was it. I saw how much hard work she had put into providing for me, along with being a single mother and playing the role of both parents. As I reached high school, I knew I wanted to be involved with money, businesses, and even helping people. I knew that all three factors could be done altogether, which is what led me to be where I am today.
I’ve always thought about those around me and how I could help them in return for what they’ve done for me. With my education goals for the future, I feel that I’ve prepared myself for what I’m willing to involve myself in. Especially taking college classes to introduce myself early into my future majors, I’m sacrificing my time early during my senior year. I’ve got myself a headstart and I’m able to still have more time to build up my plans. To sum it up, education has always been the go-to when it comes to pursuing something. Once I know what I’m moving forward and working with, I know that I can be passionate about what I do.
