The Story of my Life by Alvaro - March 2016 Scholarship Essay

March 9, 2016

To Whom It May Concern,

My name is Alvaro A. Serrato, transfer student to the College of Honors at the University of Arizona and I would love to obtain the scholarship that your institution generously offers. I am a 36 year old male who wishes to continue an academic journey, retaken two years ago, with the purpose of being a prepared and educated citizen that enriches and gives back to the community. My educational goal is to become an educator in the area of Linguistics.

I obtained my Associates Degree last May, graduating with honors from Pima Community College in Tucson, Arizona. The completion of the Liberal Arts degree allowed me to transfer to the University of Arizona, and the achievement of having a 3.7 GPA opened the opportunity to enter the College of Honors in this institution, in which I currently hold a 4.0 GPA. I want to concentrate in the Humanities field, with emphasis in Linguistics; as a full time student, it would take me two more years to complete this goal and dream.

Investing in others would be the ultimate purpose of obtaining an educational degree. This scholarship would give me the opportunity to obtain my Humanities Degree and become an educator, having the privilege to invest in future generations. I am a firm believer in giving back what we by grace have received, and I am persuaded that education enables people to make of this, a better world. The humanities field empowers individuals to succeed and be better every day. There is much to learn, and therefore much to teach; I long to be an educator in this area to invest in others.

Having currently the challenging condition of only one income moves me to seek financial help to fulfill this dream. My wife and I were able to afford my previous education without the necessity of asking for help to cover any educational expenses. She recently lost her job of 12 years, leaving us in a challenging condition in all aspects, including the educational one. I am currently a part time employee. That is the reason why today I write to you, asking for your help in fulfilling an academic goal, an educational dream that intends to invest in others and serve our community.

I reiterate my eagerness to contribute positively to our society and I will do so, through the degree that I soon will obtain. I thank institutions like yours that financially support those who long to educate themselves, who aim to succeed in life and, strive to be good citizens who aspire to leave a positive legacy in their communities.

Yours truly,

Alvaro A. Serrato
