In taking Student Activities by Ally - September 2017 Scholarship Essay
One elective which my school offers is called Student Activities. It is a class dealing with the medias of my school; only juniors and seniors are allowed to apply. The students in this class are divided into teams to work on the school’s yearbook, promotional videos, campus news videos, newspaper, and as well as the art magazine. All of these medias are entirely student made. I’ve taken this elective last year, and I am continuing to do so this year. I am a co-editor in charge of the school’s art magazine called Dragon’s Den.
Last year the previous editor had already graduated, so there was no one to teach the other co-editor and me the ropes of running the art magazine. We spent the whole year adjusting the format and layout of the magazines; the text, margins, borders, textures, sizes, and fonts, not one of our magazines looked the same. Originally, we went for a picture frame style of formatting, framing the artworks and giving enough space for each. By the last issue in May, we settled on using a typical magazine catalog style layout in which boxes are closely spaced; this is also planned for the future editions of the magazines this year.
One of the things I enjoy about being a magazine editor is that I get to see the photography, drawings, literature, and other creations of my fellow school mates. Seeing their art makes me believe that education isn’t just about learning science, math, English, history, and all the other main courses; it isn’t just taking in new information, but it is also important for each individual to give out their opinions and values to express how they feel. Making art is also a way of expressing oneself and their creativity. Therefore, I feel that as a co-editor, getting the opportunity to make the magazine and distribute it to other students for viewing to be a very important position to be in.
Overall, Student Activities has enhanced my education by giving me skills of time management, more insight into doing larger projects, and the experience of communicating with my teacher to discuss the magazine itself. These are skills that are useful in education and will also be useful in the future in which I may need to communicate with my coworkers in completing a large project for a company. In conclusion, I have enjoyed my work in being an editor of Dragon’s Den and also getting to share all the wonderful artworks that students have made.
