The Value of Serving Others by Allison - April 2022 Scholarship Essay

Growing up in a school that was focused on servant leadership, I had many opportunities to be involved in volunteer service outings and projects. One particular volunteer experience that I will always remember is when I went to St. Anne Center for Multi-Generational Care in middle school. I was assigned with another girl or two to help out a few elderly mentally disabled patients. I was able to visit with the patients by talking to them, playing a game, and serving them a snack. I observed how the nurses working there so graciously responded to the patients who were not always the easiest to control or be kind to as several had mental impairments and challenges.
As my time concluded at St. Anne’s, I felt so fulfilled with my time there and I realized that I love to help those who are in need and cannot always advocate for themselves. I not only loved to help the patients there, but I was truly inspired by the kind, gracious, and loving workers there. I want to be an inspiration and example for future kids because there is a huge need for volunteers and workers at organizations that take care and help others within the community and world around us.
From this volunteer experience, I discovered my passion for service and I hope to one day work at a place like St. Anne’s or start my own non-profit organization. That is why I have decided to major in nonprofit management and use my gifts and schooling to reach for this goal and give back to others.
