The Life of A Night Owl by Allison - January 2019 Scholarship Essay
There are two types of people in this world: the morning person and the night owl. You know that saying, "the early bird gets the worm"? It could be true for some, but not for me. I've always struggled with the whole get-up-early-to-get-more-done thing. I'm most productive at night.
What's your issue with mornings, you ask? Well, I know a thing or two about waking up early. Being forced to wake up at 6:30 AM Monday-Friday every day of my adolescent life for school has not been my cup of tea. For most of the year, the sun isn't even out at this time. If the sun isn't awake, why should I be? It doesn't matter how much sleep I got. I am always groggy in the mornings. I am a sloth who hates its life and just wants to go back to bed. And it's like this until around 10 AM. And I think it's like this for most Americans, which is why many resort to caffeine to get them going. The lazy feeling I have at the beginning of each day does not help with productivity.
At night, that all changes. After a full day of getting inspired to do things, I am now ready to do them. I may relax a bit after school, then eat some dinner, and then I feel all charged up and ready to go! This is usually either out of boredom or my energy spiking. But it helps to know that my schedule is free. I can do whatever I want with it until I decide to go to bed, and that motivates me. I don't like to just sit around, especially when I know things need to get done. And since I'm usually the most energized at night, I have the extra oomph to do them. And sometimes they are the things that are usually hated, like vacuuming or walking the dog. But at the end of the day I just think, "why not?!" Night time really is the best time.
Being a night owl has boded well for me in my life. I don't think I've missed out on much when given the chance to sleep in on Saturday mornings. I still get just as much done as anyone who wakes up at the crack of dawn. I give props to the people who can do that and still keep energy up throughout the day, but that's just never been me. At night when energy and boredom reach their peak, I'm ready to crack down on that to-do list.
