Dedication and Humility by Allison - December 2018 Scholarship Essay

Since 1901, 129 people have been honored with the Nobel Peace Prize, an honor awarded to people who have "done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses," according to Alfred Nobel's concept.

Martin Luther King, Jr., Nelson Mandela and Malala Yousafzai embodied these attributes; dedication and humility. Their passion for their work; work that engages their heart and as well as their brains for the common good of a nation’s people to become better united.

Martin Luther King Jr. epitomized the qualities of dedication and humility. His actions made him one of the great leaders of the 20th century, becoming Time Magazine's "Man of the Year" in 1963 and a Nobel Peace Prize winner in 1964. His “I Have a Dream” speech outlines his dedication to his cause. He had total commitment as a leader to stand up and do what’s right and his vision and intensity showed his dedication in his work. His disruption of the status quo exemplified how he was dedicated. He had a servant leadership quality which demonstrated his humility.

Malala, the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace prize at age 17 displayed humility. She was a Pakistani teenager catapulted on to the world stage when she was shot in the head by the Taliban. The way she kept the world’s media waiting showed the purity of her purpose, to have a chance to be anything she chooses to be and achieve whatever she can in a free world. Clearly there are many attributes that Nobel Peace prize winners display. Leadership, humility, dedication and honor are just a few.
