German Immersion Camp on a Global Scale by Allison - November 2017 Scholarship Essay

In the fall of 2018 I will be attending Washington State University, majoring in Marketing and International Business. I have applied to the Honors Program at the school and would like to study abroad.
My German communication skills are barely satisfactory, even though I attended three years’ worth of language classes in junior high and high school. I hope to rectify this by studying in Germany and being forced to speak German all the time. In high school, I got the opportunity to go to a weekend German immersion camp two years in a row with other Washington State high school students. It was fun because we all struggled somewhat with the language. This spurred me on to want to travel abroad and learn the language from native speakers.
Germany is widely known as one of the international business meccas. It’s location in Europe, surrounded by nine other countries, and having two different sea ports available, makes it the ideal trading location. The country takes the prize for being the largest European economy, and it is a powerhouse in exports internationally.
Not only could I learn the language and be able to communicate with people from Germany as well as Austria, Switzerland, and other countries utilizing German, I would also be able to take classes in business. The school I will be attending in the Fall of 2018 offers both programs to Austria and Germany. As Germany is basically the United States’ largest trading partner in Europe, it would make sense to take a look at their programs, to understand why American companies prefer to do business with Germany and vice versa.
In a nutshell, being able to study and learn in Germany, one of the largest global marketers, would give me a leg up on my studies and education. As a student from the Yakima, Washington area, with plentiful hops, I imagine doing business with German companies. The brewing industry in Germany is very reliant upon the Yakima hop farms.
