Professor Creg- Varsity Tutors Scholarship Essay by Allison - August 2017 Scholarship Essay
If I was a college professor, I would teach orchestra. I have been in orchestra since fourth grade and it is one of my favorite classes. While I have been touring many different colleges, I found that most do not have an orchestra.
It was required to play the violin in fourth grade at my elementary school. The next year is when we had the choice to either continue playing violin, switch to a different instrument like the viola, cello, or bass, or to take technology instead of strings. I decided to continue playing the violin even though I really wanted to play the cello. When I got to my freshman year, there was another person who said she was wanting to learn how to play the cello. During sectional rehearsals, my orchestra teacher taught us how to read the bass clef and where to put our fingers. She let us play our cellos during the last concert of our freshman year and we fully switched over our sophomore year.
I am doing a duel credit program at a community college where I will be taking all of my classes at the college my senior year. They did not have orchestra so I worked my schedule around my orchestra time at the high school. During college tours, I always end up asking if they have an orchestra or an orchestra class and the answer is usually "No, but you can start one." If I ended up being a professor at a college, I would make sure that there would be an orchestra class so that students like me would get the chance to continue with orchestra while at college. I want to be able to continue and not have to stop playing after high school.
