Ideas on How to Improve the Education System by Allie - July 2022 Scholarship Essay
I am one of the many people who believe education is essential, especially for those who wish to be successful; However, I also think that students' mental health is just as important. One of the changes I want to see in the next ten years in the education system is a more significant emphasis on the importance of mental health. Teenagers and young adults are very susceptible to depression, suicidal thoughts, and anxiety. Especially with a pandemic, constant political chaos, school shootings, and overly rigorous and time-consuming school work. The amount of stress and expectations young adults have in school is enormous. The least that the education system can do is care about students' mental health and try its best to give resources to students that can help them overcome or deal with their issues. Students can't and most likely don't perform well when they are pushed past their limits and don't know how to fix their situation.
Not only do I wish that the education system in America has better access to resources that help or improve students' mental health, but another change I wish to see in education is better and more affordable access to obtaining help for those who have special needs or have learning disabilities. Thankfully, my brother and I were privileged enough to attend a private school, but my parents had to spend lots of extra money to get my brother into special classes since he has learning disabilities. Not every parent has the money to help their child obtain a better education, such as the education given by a private school, let alone have enough money to receive the resources to allow their children with learning disabilities a proper and well-off education. It would benefit students with difficulty learning to have more affordable and better access to specific learning tools and accommodations. Even if these students have accommodations, I wish for schools to take these accommodations more seriously.
I hope that these changes will happen in the next decade and will help the next generation while they strive for success in their education.
