Thinking outside the box is, for the most part, a universal saying. One that most people understand. Even though they understand what is suggested, do they really understand the meaning. To do that, one must dissect the saying.
Let’s start off with the ‘box’. Obviously the person saying this doesn’t literally mean remove yourself from a box. The box is a metaphor for the restrictions that we place on ourselves and that society places on us.
The other parts of the sentence are pretty literal, as in you have to think and outside is just a simpler way of saying beyond.
Now we have to piece these together and come up with the final outcome. Which would be “you have to think beyond the restrictions you place on yourself and that society places on you”.
Once you understand the saying it becomes time to apply the saying in your everyday life. This means that you take the extra minute(s) to step back and think about whether or not this is something “basic” or is it a cool new idea.
To me that means that I’m not just going with the flow. To think outside of the box I need to take every situation as it is and put my own personal spin on it.
