Time is Ticking by Aliyah - March 2019 Scholarship Essay

When I received the tour of my high school as a scared freshmen, the tour guide was a senior and she showed us around and then went on her way. I never received any words of advice from the guides. If I were given the opportunity to give incoming freshmen a piece of advice I’d talk their ears off. There is so many things to say but if I were chose one it would be, don’t waste your time. It’s such a simple key but can be taken in so many ways. For one you can believe it means don’t procrastinate and wait till the last second for homework. So many people will give their advice as don’t procrastinate but the reason it is said so often is because it’s never taken into consideration. On the other hand you can take the simple key as don’t just sit back and let time fly in high school.I would tell them to go to the school’s games, concerts, dances, carnivals, and do some extracurricular. A lot of students tend to say they aren’t in anything because there’s nothing there for them, but how would they know if they haven’t tried? Freshman year I did cheer leading and that was not meant for me but at least I tried. Sophomore year to the last show of senior year I did theater and I fell in love with it. I never thought I’d enjoy it but I figured I would try and now I’m considering a career into the theater world. You can’t just sit back in high school and let the years go by. These four years are the last years of you being a child. You step out of high school and are ambushed by the real world and it’s not nearly as fun as not having such harsh responsibilities. Starting freshman year I never knew my entire life would flip in these four years. I walked in thinking it would be just four years and I was out to live my life but I needed to start living my life then. I was diagnosed sophomore year with adrenal insufficiency. I was not in a good state and I had some pretty big scares in those times. In those terrifying times I really realized I shouldn’t be waiting till I get out of high school to start experiencing life. Life can end so suddenly and there’s never a warning. I would really encourage the incoming freshmen to experience as much as they can, venture out, and make as many memories as they can. I enjoyed every theater production, went out with friends, went to dances, and started finding myself. High school is a hard time and you’ll go through ups and downs and go through friends and relationships but nothing can take away the memories you are making.
