What I plan on majoring in college and why I chose that major by Alivia - April 2025 Scholarship Essay

I am choosing to major in Speech-Language Pathology in college for many reasons. My inspiration for that path started from a teacher at my High School this year, Mrs Daniels. I am a teaching assistant for her for my second period, and she is a Speech Language Pathologist. I see what she does day to day with her students and how she creates a personal connection with every one of them. She really takes the time to notice their strengths and weaknesses, enhancing their strengths and working on their weaknesses to make them stronger not only as a student for the future but as a person, and that inspires me to choose that major. I have observed students at the start of the year struggle with speech and language barriers, and just seeing them grow from then to now has been an amazing transformation to see firsthand. This has fueled a desire in me to help others overcome these obstacles one day. I am not sure yet if I would want to work with younger students in Elementary School or older students in High School. I do know that I have a passion for helping others and their communication. I am eager to contribute to the field that not only enhances people's quality of life but also empowers individuals to connect with their thoughts and feelings. And helping them not let anything hold them back. That is what I love about the Speech-Language Pathology major: you get to play a crucial role in treating various communication disorders, for example, speech delays, language impairments, swallowing difficulties, and many more. That is what excites me the most. With dedication and with compassion, I am ready to embrace the challenges and rewards that come with this vital profession!
