What Attending College means for Me by Alisa - June 2013 Scholarship Essay

By attending college I am the first person in my immediate family to attend and graduate from college.  I am also in the top five of all of my family to work towards my Bachelor’s degree.  This is not only something that is going to make me proud of myself, but something that is going to make my family proud.  When my husband and I have children, I want them to be proud of their mom and all of my accomplishments.  Since, neither of my parents went to college it was tough in high school listening to other kids bragging on how smart their parents are and how many degrees they have.  I knew my parents were smart, but once it got to the part of discussing degrees, I knew I had lost.  My parents chose to get married and find any job they could to help pay the bills.  I know I grew up well and we never went hungry, but I want to be able to have a degree and apply for jobs I know I can do and deserve after all of my hard work and dedication has paid off.  Sometimes I have doubts about finishing due to a financial hardship, or a really tough class one semester.  But when I think about my future and my future family, there is NO WAY I am giving up!  I am going to fight this battle until I have won.  I will not be defeated by anything or anyone.  I will graduate and be the best employee I can possibly be!
