Motivation by Alicia - January 2018 Scholarship Essay
The one word that I have chosen to describe why I have attended college Is motivation. I never realized how little I had growing up until I got a little older. I grew up in a family with 4 sisters and three brothers. Growing up was tough. I remember moving from house to house, and with many other family members. All of us would have to share one room for a few months until my dad could raise enough money for us to get our own place. When my parents went clothes shopping, we always went to second hand stores and yard sales. All our grocery shopping was due to welfare. We would have to wait every month to receive food stamps. I don’t recall ever having my own new anything. This included shoes, clothes, backpacks, and toys. Everything I owned was hand me downs.
After graduating from high school, I vowed to myself that I will continue my education to never put myself in a position where I will raise my kids the way I was. I want them to have better opportunities that I had growing up. These memories of my poor childhood have kept me motivated throughout the years. When I am ready to have kids, I will be financially stable, and able to give them a childhood that I never had growing up. Continuing my education will give me the opportunity to work doing something that I love to do. My memories of my childhood will continue to motivate me to continue my education.
