Question Everything by Alicia - July 2016 Scholarship Essay
A lesson I will never forget is when one of my teachers told us to question everything. He told us people are always trying to sell us something and everything is not black and white so we should not take everything at face value. He challenged us to really think about what people are saying and do our research. Because in the end, our life will fall through if we stand on someone else’s foundation.
It was a hard pill to swallow but it made me realize to not take everything at face value, but really discover what I believe in. It led to a lot of soul searching and even long nights of crying as I came to realize what I believed before was lacking in the why department. I began to change and research everything from politics to religion. I refused to have foundation be based on someone else’s. I refused to just be part of the masses.
Because of this lesson my beliefs, and ideology have a stronger foundation and now anytime someone tells me something whether it’s a teacher or a friend I do my research and see if it’s true and something I really believe.
