How Genetics Benefits Society by Ali - December 2023 Scholarship Essay
Genetics is becoming a very important part of society. More people are using genetic technology to find out more about what diseases they could have or pass down to their children. There is still so much more to learn and discover in the field of genetics that will benefit society.
I want to become a gene therapist. That means that I would take unspecialized STEM cells out of the bone marrow, specialize them, and then insert them back into the human body to cure a disease. Using a genetics degree I can help others through my work, which is exactly what I want to do with my life.
There are many other careers in the genetics field that help others too like epidemiologist, genetic counselor, lab researcher, etc. All these jobs help society through genetics and research.
Modern technology allows the field of genetics to continue to evolve, but with the developing field there needs to be more discussion about ethics. There is a large debate about the ethics and concerns of genetic testing and the claim that regulations need to be updated with the new technology. I want to be a voice for good in the science world to help people get the information that they need while having their privacy protected.
With every new person researching a disease or a bacterium, more discoveries are made. These discoveries are validated and then can be shared with the public to help everyone know more about the disease or bacterium.
