Leadership: The Road to Success by Alexus - March 2015 Scholarship Essay
Leadership is an important skill not just in college, but in life in general. It is how things get done in a timely manner without having to worry about procrastination. Whether the skill is needed in sports, team projects, or any occasion where the initiative needs to be taken. I do believe that in order to succeed in college leadership skills are necessary.
For example, as I mentioned before, if a high school athlete is going on to play their sport at the college level they will need their leadership skills. Despite the fact that there might be a team captain and a coach, every player must step up to be a leader at some point. Even if it is just leading by example, leadership skills are still needed through communication, doing the required task, and inspiring others to do the same. Although leadership skills are needed in the game, they are also needed outside of the game, in the classroom. Say the professor assigns a group project, this means leadership skills are required of at least one of the members, if not all. Given, not everyone can be the leader at the same time, but each person can be a leader at their given tasks in order to get the project done. Another instance where leadership skills are needed in college is in clubs or other extracurricular activities. Planning a mixer at a sorority, starting a new club, or being the president of the student government all require leadership skills in order for the event to succeed.
To succeed in college desires not only dedication to one’s academics, but also the ability to put ourselves out there and try new things. There are times when some leaders must be followers, but at some point each follower must become a leader. Leadership skills include great communication, problem solving, listening, being a role model, and taking the initiative. Although not everyone is born with these skills they can be developed and exploring life is a great way to do it. Yes, graduating college is the ultimate goal, but doing it by keeping your nose stuck in a book is not preparing you for life. Learning to be a leader in college will prepare you to be a leader in life after college and if you can do it in college, then you can do it while pursuing your future.
