Time Flies With Education by Alexis - January 2025 Scholarship Essay
“In high school, time goes by fast, like super quick in a blink of an eye” is what my current AP English Literature teacher, Mr. Sacks told me when I had his English class back in 9th grade. I didn’t think of it much but having that quote repeated to me every year just reminds me how quickly high school is going by fast for me.
Simply starting up high school wearing masks and following safety protocols after COVID-19 really threw me off and I didn’t know much of what to do academically or socially. Stepping into my first few classes of high school felt strange because I was in a totally different environment which impacted my choice to even stay at my high school. That’s when my teacher said that quote to everyone in my English class. I viewed him as a very serious, but polite teacher at first. Soon after, I really discovered that he was going to eventually be my favorite teacher throughout all my high school years!
Having Mr. Sacks made me realize that I’m capable of even more challenging courses because the way he taught the 9th grade Honors English class I was in, it felt like I was learning complex topics easily while learning different famous novels popular among other schools. Learning other complex words and having weekly quizzes definitely helped improve my vocabulary and word choices to not make any future essays bland and boring.
Mr. Sacks really had a significant impact on my educational journey because he was able to strengthen my literacy skills and other necessary skills for English writing. Throughout high school and even taking my health college course, I was able to formulate good essays or pages of work without struggling too much. It really felt like I had a cheat code on me at all times whenever I remembered anything that I learned from his 9th grade class.
Being currently enrolled in his AP English Literature class has benefited me even more. Although I would tirelessly spend hours or days working on papers or essays that were endlessly long, I was able to triumph over my laziness and receive good grades on my pieces of work. During class, we would altogether read different novels or short pieces of literature that included diction that were way beyond our comprehension and even struggled to read sometimes. That’s the beauty of taking rigorous courses, I am able to challenge myself even further and understand what I’m really looking at.
I’ve taken my normal yearly English classes but I would also have English electives in my 11th grade year and right now as well. The work isn’t too difficult but it does require some skills that I’ve learned in the past or what I’m learning as of right now.
There’s only so much time left for me in high school and when I hear that quote for the last time in the end of my school year, I would be thankful for having Mr. Sacks as a teacher who really brought a positive impact on my educational journey.
