What Experiences Led Me to My Major by Alexis - February 2024 Scholarship Essay
I have always loved a good mystery. Give me a Who-dun-it and I’m hooked. For as long as I can remember, I’ve watched Law and Order, Criminal Minds, and NCIS, to name a few. I find human behavior and following clues to solve crimes so interesting, it was only natural that I would choose Forensic Chemistry as my major.
Watching TV crime lab technicians put together the puzzle pieces that help solve crime fascinates me. They match gunshot striations, blade marks, and wound patterns to find the murder weapon. They match DNA and analyze hair follicles to find the suspect. They analyze stomach contents, fingerprints, and bite marks to further help identify and eventually convict a criminal. Their job is not only fascinating, but important and rewarding. I knew I needed to learn more.
I am currently in my first forensic class towards earning my major, Survey of Criminalistics. This is the class that I look forward to attending. It’s the class I find fascinating and can’t stop thinking about. It’s the class that has confirmed that my choice of Forensic Chemistry for a major is the right choice. I know that some really tough classes are in my future as I work towards my degree. But the passion I feel about solving these types of mysteries will fuel me with a consuming desire to excel in every aspect of my learning. Growing up watching crime drama, there was just no other choice than to go into Forensic Chemistry.
