The Encouraging Teacher by Alexis - January 2015 Scholarship Essay

As a student, I can only help but feel sympathetic for my professors. I watch as they attempt to manage many ignorant kids at once, while trying to maintain a pleasant composure. Not only are these brave souls trying to supervise, but they have to explain difficult subjects and concepts. Presenting factual information to wiry children is not a simple task. Most of them are able to multi-task successfully, but there are a few teachers that I wish I could have advised.

I would have explained to them that it’s okay to connect with their students on a friend to friend basis. Not only are they supposed to be our advisors and mentors, but they are there to encourage us in our daily lives. I am positive that students would absorb their studies more efficiently if they knew that their professors supported them as friends. Secondly, I would remind teachers that their pupils are only human. They get sleepy, hungry, cranky, and exasperated. Therefore, they do not always study the way they should. Instead of becoming irritated and angry at this, professors should assist their students with tutorship and verbal encouragement.

Despite the fact that students can be lazy and vexatious, their teachers possess the opportunity of a lifetime. With a little reassurance and coaxing, they can bring optimistic influence and the gift of education to every one of their pupils’ lives.
