The Notetaker by Alexis - December 2019 Scholarship Essay

For my volunteer opportunities, I struggled to find what to do. Soon thereafter, the opportunity was opened to be a note taker for disability services. As I applied to take notes for my biology class, I read the requirements. As a note taker, I was required to submit notes digitally once a week by Friday. However, when it came to submitting near test/exam days we had to submit the notes 2 days prior. I decided to go the extra step to complete the optional study guide accurately and submit it to the website for students to use that were in need. In the midst of this opportunity I actually met one of the students I was taking notes for.
She overheard me speaking to the professor about what was necessary to take notes over and upload that weak due to a low content amount, as I want to provide as much as possible. As she overheard me she proceeded to ask me if I was the note taker for this class. I explained I was, and she happily informed me that I take really good and detailed notes which made me feel as if I was doing my job correctly and even surpassing expectations. Whenever I take my notes, I write them on paper first for my benefit and then type the notes up in simpler terms for easier understanding. I have always been someone who is good at making sense of something complicated when explaining a subject to someone. I think this opportunity has allowed me to grow as an individual to where I am better capable at understanding my strengths when it comes to being depended upon by individuals in need. Also, the fact that I got to meet someone who was dependent upon was completely unexpected and rewarding. Halfway through the process, I had someone email me from disability services asking me if I could help that individual study because I know how to help other comprehend so much easier. I agreed to do this however the student ended up being busy so it never ended up happening. These little rewards and upbringings throughout really showed me that I am capable of putting my mind towards something and doing it correctly regardless of the circumstances and the tasks required.
