Social Justice for Migrants by Alexis - November 2019 Scholarship Essay

During my freshman year, I wanted to get involved in what I loved. At first, it was difficult to seek out opportunities in the fashion industry in my small hometown of Tucson. One day I stumbled across Phoenix Fashion Week’s social media page and decided to reach out to them via email, not really thinking too much of it. I asked if there were any internship opportunities. I received a response to come to their next ambassador scouting meeting at their office in Phoenix.
A week after the interview I received a call from the executive director who said that he would like to bring me on board. As an Education Ambassador, my job would be to get my school as well as other schools within southern Arizona involved with Phoenix fashion week and provide kids my age with the same opportunity I had been given to experience the fashion industry. At this moment I knew I was going to become apart of something bigger.
I had reached out to my school's fashion club president explaining to her my position and she was happy to have someone that could connect her club members to something as big as fashion week. We began planning ways for the club to get involved with events, and sure enough, my school's fashion club, as well as others, ended up attending fashion week later in the fall.
I feel fortunate to be able to have shared something so extraordinary with people that shared the same passion as me.
