Fahrenheit 451: Challenging Your Mind by Alexis - July 2013 Scholarship Essay

Of all the books that I had to read in high school, the book I enjoyed the most and consider to be one of my favorites is Ray Bradbury's "Fahrenheit 451." The book was my favorite because of the message behind it. I always enjoyed reading and the message within the book was the importance of books and reading and how we should fight for it. In the book Guy Montag defys the government and feeds his curiosity by reading books. For many years books have been banned and brought back into school systems and banned again. The message within Fahrenheit 451 gave me the notion that you should read whatever you want, even if it has ideas or storylines that people do not agree with or want their children introduced to. Books are a type of literary expression and if we restrict what people can say and take away their opportunity to say these things what kind of world are we living in. The simple message of the book led to the development of my continuous need to express myself, through my writings, movies, dancing and singing. The reason that book is my favorite is because it put something in me that has stayed with me through this day and has helped build up my love for books and reading.
